Then Dosinia runs away to the mainland, and Esmerine is sent to retrieve her. Using magic to transform her tail into legs, she makes her way unsteadily to the capital city. There she comes upon a friend she hasn't seen since childhood--a dashing young man named Alandare, who belongs to a winged race of people. As Esmerine and Alandare band together to search for Dosinia, they rekindle a friendship . . . and ignite the emotions for a love so great it cannot be bound by sea, land, or air.

This book comes out in October so keep your eyes peeled! Recently named Lord Fairfax of Doncaster Hall, the breathtaking, secretive stranger agrees to perform the one act of kindness that can rescue the Scottish beauty from scandal and disgrace--by taking Veronica as his bride.

Journeying with Montgomery Fairfax to his magnificent estate in the Highlands, Veronica knows deep in her heart that this is a man she can truly love--a noble soul, a caring and passionate lover whose touch awakens feelings she's never before known. Yet there are ghosts in Montgomery's past that haunt him still. Unless Veronica can somehow unlock the enigma that is her new husband, their powerful passion could be undone by the sins and sorrows of yesterday.

Veronica has a Gift. she can feel what other people are feeling. She decides to try and find some answers and finds herself drugged and in a very dangerous situation. That's where Montgomery comes in to save her from a terrible fate. When her rescuer returns her to her uncles home, she is thought to be ruined and is kicked out. With no where to go Montgomery takes her in and decides he has to marry her to save her, again.

Karen Ranney delivers another thoroughly satisfying novel. I liked the characters and the story. I wish that Veronica and Montgomery had come together sooner emotionally, though I can understand why they didn't as they both had some ghosts from their pasts to overcome. But her gaiety is interrupted by disturbing, dreamlike visions she has only at sunset—visions that offer glimpses of the future. Soon, friends and strangers alike call on Amelia to hear her prophecies. However, a forbidden romance with Nathaniel, an artist, threatens the new life Amelia is building in Baltimore. This enigmatic young man is keeping secrets of his own—still, Amelia finds herself irrepressibly drawn to him.
When one of her darkest visions comes to pass, Amelia’s world is thrown into chaos. And those around her begin to wonder if she’s not the seer of dark portents, but the cause.

I'm finding it hard to write a review for this book. Was it fantastic? No. Did I like it and would I recommend it to others? Yes. After reading this book I felt that high you get when you finish a book with a good ending and thought "wow that was good." but the more I thought about it the more parts of the story where a little confusing or I wish that the author had gone into more detail. The Vespertine was well written and had somewhat poetic prose. Make sure you pay attention to the dates when a new section starts otherwise you'll be a little confused.

Overall though I did enjoy this, it makes a quick read at only 293 pages. I say go ahead and give it a chance! Here's a quote from the book that might snag your interest.

"The stars could have burned out around us, the moon could have fallen from the sky, and I wouldn't have known it. Not when he leaned indecently close and pressed his cheek against mine to murmur, "Tell me a secret." I wanted him to tell me how he stopped time like that. How he read my mind. I wanted to admit I wondered if thoughts of me troubled him when he lay awake at night. But I could make none of that come to my lips.... Instead... I whispered back, "I've seen the future." He didn't laugh. He didn't mock, not like he had done at Privalovna's performance. In the middle of our waltz, he stopped, nose to nose with me. He uncovered me with a look that somehow bared him, too. And his question told me everything - that he stopped time because he needed me, that he read my mind because we were one. That I troubled his nights, indeed, because what he asked revealed it all. For a moment, I see the look of anguish in his eyes, then he blinks it away and slips off into the water. I immediately think of the gator. It's still down there somewhere..."

A science-class field trip to the Everglades is supposed to be fun, but Sarah's new at Glades Academy, and her fellow freshmen aren't exactly making her feel welcome. When an opportunity for an unauthorized side trip on an air boat presents itself, it seems like a perfect escape—an afternoon without feeling like a sore thumb. But one simple oversight turns a joyride into a race for survival across the river of grass. Sarah will have to count on her instincts—and a guy she barely knows—if they have any hope of making it back alive.

Lost in the River of Grass takes on the classic survival genre using one of the country's most unique wild places as a backdrop. In this tense, character-driven thriller, Sarah must overcome prejudice and the unforgiving wilderness in a struggle to survive.

Lost in the River of Grass was not something I would usually read, but I’m glad I did. This book was based on a true story, as Ginny Rorby states on her website. “Lost in the River of Grass is based on the true story of my husband’s ill-fated trip to the Everglades with his then girlfriend in his airboat. While they were ‘visiting’ one of the hunting camps in the Everglades, the airboat sank. It took them three days to walk out. I wrote the original story of that ordeal for Fort Lauderdale’s Gulf Coast magazine, published in the late 1990s.” Check out her website here. This book reminds me of Hatchet in some ways. It’s a story about survival with a little humor and romance thrown in.

At first I wasn’t really that into this book but it gets better page after page. The characters of Sarah and Andy are so believable. Everything about them is so true to a almost fourteen, and fifteen year old, the way they act and how they handle situations; but not in an annoying “gosh you’re so immature and childish way.” Although I have to say I’m 24 and would probably freak out too if I was in that situation! As the story progressed I really started to like Sarah and Andy! There were so many times that I felt like I was on the edge of my seat waiting to see what the next moment would bring. I would definitely recommend this book to someone looking for a quick read!

I was able to review this book, courtesy of Netgalley.com. But that was before she discovered the family secret, and that her hot crush, Archer Cross, is an agent for The Eye, a group bent on wiping Prodigium off the face of the earth.

Turns out, Sophie’s a demon, one of only two in the world—the other being her father. What’s worse, she has powers that threaten the lives of everyone she loves. Which is precisely why Sophie decides she must go to London for the Removal, a dangerous procedure that will destroy her powers.

But once Sophie arrives she makes a shocking discovery. Her new friends? They’re demons too. Meaning someone is raising them in secret with creepy plans to use their powers, and probably not for good. Meanwhile, The Eye is set on hunting Sophie down, and they’re using Archer to do it. But it’s not like she has feelings for him anymore. Does she?

When I finished Demonglass the only thing I could think was "OMG it can't be over!". I just sat there staring at it like more pages would appear if I wanted it bad enough...too bad that isn't how it works!

Sophie's dad finally shows up at Hex Hall and convinces her, along with Jenna and Cal, to spend the summer with him in England before she decides if she really wants to go through with the Removal. Once there she finds out there are other demons and her and her dad set out trying to find who has transformed the teens and why. Archer shows up and Sophie is still drawn to him and can't seem to stay away even though she knows they can't and shouldn't be together. There are some major revelations and some big secrets exposed in this book. Demonglass is the perfect blend of mystery, action, and romance and ends on a total cliffhanger!! I almost can't stand that the next book in the series won't be coming out til sometime in 2012!

Definitely read this book!!

Cover of the Week - Entwined

Entwined by Heather Dixon
Publisher: Greenwillow Books
Publication Date: March 29, 2011
Page Count: 480

Description from Goodreads:
Azalea is trapped. Just when she should feel that everything is before her . . . beautiful gowns, dashing suitors, balls filled with dancing . . . it's taken away. It's just a simple "this will be fun" kind of thing.

I call it the "2011 Read Your Name Challenge". It's really simple! All you have to do is pick out book titles that start with the letters of your name. Can't get any easier than that!

For Example:
B: Book of Love by Abra Ebner

         R: Reincarnation by Suzanne Weyn

<strike>A</strike><strike>: Angelfire by Courtney Allison Moulton</strike>

     <strike>N: Nightshade by Andrea Cremer</strike>

     <strike>D: Demonglass by Rachel Hawkins</strike>

    I: Incarceron by Catherine Fisher

Here are the rules:

1. You don't have to read in the order of your name and you don't have to decide right away which books you want to read.

2. This challenge CAN crossover with other challenges.

3. You can use your first name along with your middle or even your last if you are feeling adventurous.

4. Finish by December 31st, 2011.

5. Have FUN!

Please leave a comment letting me know you have joined the challenge, if you have a blog I would love to see your blog URL attached to the comment! Please add the button to your sidebar and make sure that it links back to this post so others can join the challenge if they wish!

2011 Highlander Reading Challenge

I've decided to participate in the 2011 Highlander Reading Challenge hosted by Lori at Escape Between The Pages.
Publisher: Razorbill
Publication Date: September 21, 2010
Page Count: 343

Description from Goodreads:
Mackie Doyle is not one of us. Though he lives in the small town of Gentry, he comes from a world of tunnels and black murky water, a world of living dead girls ruled by a little tattooed princess. He is a Replacement, left in the crib of a human baby sixteen years ago. Now, because of fatal allergies to iron, blood, and consecrated ground, Mackie is fighting to survive in the human world.

Mackie would give anything to live among us, to practice on his bass or spend time with his crush, Tate. But when Tate's baby sister goes missing, Mackie is drawn irrevocably into the underworld of Gentry, known as Mayhem. He must face the dark creatures of the Slag Heaps and find his rightful place, in our world, or theirs.

I'm going to give this book a solid 3 stars. It was good but I don't think I'll ever reread it. I found the beginning very hard to get into, in fact after reading a chapter I put it down and read a different book instead. I did want to read the whole thing though so I trudged through the beginning and actually got a little into the book.

Just like the description says this book is dark and full of unnatural things. When Tate's little sister goes missing Mackie is forced to confront who and what he really is and decides that he can't let something horrible happen to the toddler. He faces some pretty nasty challenges on his quest to save the little girl and eventually comes to love himself and let others love him back. This book does have teen drinking, cussing, and a little toplessness...just as a warning.

Overall this book was very dark and grungy but not bad. I would recommend it to someone looking for something completely different. I can say that I have never read a book quite like this one. If you read it I would love to know what you think!

Brightly Woven

Brightly Woven by Alexandra Bracken

Publisher: Egmont USA

Publication Date: March 23, 2010

Page Count: 354

Description from Goodreads:

Sydelle Mirabil is living proof that, with a single drop of rain, a life can be changed forever. Tucked away in the farthest reaches of the kingdom, her dusty village has suffered under the weight of a strangely persistent drought. That is, of course, until a wizard wanders into town and brings the rain with him.

In return for this gift, Wayland North is offered any reward he desires—and no one is more surprised than Sydelle when, without any explanation, he chooses her. Taken from her home, Sydelle hardly needs encouragement to find reasons to dislike North. He drinks too much and bathes too little, and if that isn’t enough to drive her to madness, North rarely even uses the magic he takes such pride in possessing. Yet, it’s not long before she realizes there’s something strange about the wizard, who is as fiercely protective of her as he is secretive about a curse that turns his limbs a sinister shade of black and leaves him breathless with agony. Unfortunately, there is never a chance for her to seek answers.

Along with the strangely powerful quakes and storms that trace their path across the kingdom, other wizards begin to take an inexplicable interest in her as well, resulting in a series of deadly duels. Against a backdrop of war and uncertainty, Sydelle is faced with the growing awareness that these events aren’t as random as she had believed—that no curse, not even that of Wayland North, is quite as terrible as the one she herself may carry.

Brightly Woven was a breath of fresh air. I really enjoyed reading this book. It reminded me of when I was younger reading books like Dragon's Milk and Dealing with Dragons. Not that this is a book about dragons, its just the old world feel of it. It's like being transported back to a time when magic was still possible. Plus the cover is gorgeous!

Brightly Woven has mystery, adventure, romance, and magic all "woven" into one great story. Although the end wrapped up quite nicely I would definitely read a sequel if one were to come out! I hope you check out Brightly Woven and let me know what you think!

Crescendo

Crescendo by Becca Fiztpatrick
Publisher: Simon & Schuster Children's Publishing
Publication Date: October 19, 2010
Page Count: 427

Nora Grey's life is still far from perfect. Surviving an attempt on her life wasn't pleasant, but atleast she got a guardian angel out of it: a mysterious, magnetic, gorgeous guardian angel. But, despite his role in her life, Patch has been acting anything but angelic. He's more elusive than ever and even worse, he's started spending time with Nora's arch-enemy, Marcie Millar.

Nora would have hardly noticed Scott Parnell, an old family friend who has moved back to town, if Path hadnt been acting so distant. Even with Scott's totally infuriating attitude Nora finds herself drawn to him - despite her lingering feeling that he's hiding something.

Haunted by images of her murdered father, and questioning whether her nephilim bloodline has anything to do with his death, Nora puts herself increasingly in dangerous situations as she desperatly searches for answers. But maybe some things are better left buried, because the truth could destroy everything - and everyone - she trusts.

You know when you read a book and you have that feeling of "No, it can't be over!" at the end? Well that's what this book did to me! I really hate that I have to wait until October for the third book to come out!

It was so frustrating that Nora and Patch wanted to be together so badly but couldn't or shouldn't. Someone is following Nora around and trying to kill her. Meanwhile Patch has been reassigned as Guardian Angel to Nora's biggest enemy Marcie. As things get more and more dangerous, Nora doesn't know who she can trust and ends up falling into a trap! How will things turn out? Will Nora be saved? Will Patch be alright? She's never been particularly attracted to the boys at her school, no matter how much her best friend, Vee, pushes them at her...until Patch comes along.
With his easy smile and eyes that seem to see inside her, Nora is drawn to him against her better judgment, but after a series of terrifying encounters, Nora's not sure whom to trust. Patch seems to be everywhere she is, and to know more about her than her closest friends. She can't decide whether she should fall into his arms or run and hide. And when she tries to seek some answers, she finds herself near a truth that is far more unsettling than anything Patch makes her feel.
For Nora is right in the middle of an ancient battle between the immortal and those that have fallen - and when it comes to choosing sides, the wrong choice will cost her life.

When I saw the reviews for this book on goodreads I was really blown away, there were so many 1 and 2 star ratings! A lot of people were comparing this book to twilight...I would have never made that connection! I thought that this book was really good. It was something different which I needed. A lot of books lately have all been the same story different version and it was getting old! I liked that this story was a little dark; mystery, drama, love, and suspense all mixed into one!

Now I'm not saying that everything was perfect. It was a little confusing when Nora kept going back and forth between being terrified of Patch one minute and sometimes, literally the next minute, trusting him completely.

Overall though I did really enjoy this book and am excited to start Crescendo, the second book in the trilogy!

The Haunted

The Haunted by Jessica Verday
Publisher: Simon Pulse
Publication Date: August 31, 2010
Page Count: 467

Description from Goodreads:

An impossible truth. An impossible love.

After a summer spent reclaiming her sanity and trying to forget the boy she fell in love with—the boy who must not exist, cannot exist, because she knows that he is dead—Abbey returns to Sleepy Hollow, ready to leave the ghosts of her past behind. She throws herself into her schoolwork, her perfume-making, and her friendship with Ben, her cute and funny lab partner, who just might be her ticket to getting over Caspian once and for all.

But Abbey can never get over Caspian, and Caspian has no choice but to return to her side, for Caspian is a Shade, and Abbey is his destiny. They are tied not only to each other, but also to the town of Sleepy Hollow, and to the famous legend that binds their fates—a legend whose dark truths they are only beginning to guess....

Wow! Just wow! I literally just finished reading The Haunted and I have to say I was really blown away! As you may know The Haunted is the sequel to The Hollow, and while the first book may have been a little slow this one definitely makes up for it! You simply have to read The Hollow if for no other purpose then to read The Haunted!

Abbey has a few hard spots to get through in the beginning but then has somewhat of a revelation...I don't want to say too much and give anything away. This book is full of romance (I swear I got butterflies when Caspian took his shirt off), mystery and suspense! And the ending KILLS me!! What a cliff hanger! I'm really bummed that the next book in the trilogy doesn't come out until September 1, 2011!

Quote from The Haunted:

"I feel all these things, Abbey," he continued on. "Rage that I can't run my fingers through your hair. Sorrow that I can't lay my face next to yours. Agony that I cant steal the breathe from your lips. I cant' eat or breathe or sleep for wanting to touch you, and yet I don't eat or breathe or sleep. I'm just here. Stuck between."

~Caspian

The Hollow by Jessica Verday

The Hollow by Jessica Verday
Publisher: Simon & Schuster Children's
Publication Date: October 1, 2009
Page Count: 513

Description from Goodreads:
When Abbey’s best friend, Kristen, vanishes at the bridge near Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, everyone else is all too quick to accept that Kristen is dead…and rumors fly that her death was no accident. Abbey has never felt so desperately alone. Then she meets Caspian, the gorgeous and mysterious boy who shows up out of nowhere at Kristen’s funeral, and keeps reappearing in Abbey’s life. Caspian clearly has secrets of his own, but he’s the only person who makes Abbey feel normal again...but also special.

Just when Abbey starts to feel that she might survive all this, she learns a secret that makes her question everything she thought she knew about her best friend. How could Kristen have kept silent about so much? And could this secret have led to her death? As Abbey struggles to understand Kristen’s betrayal, she uncovers a frightening truth that nearly unravels her—one that will challenge her emerging love for Caspian, as well as her own sanity.

I was really excited to read this book. I like the cover and the story sounded interesting. After reading about 5 pages though I had to stop and set the book down. I just couldn't stay focused on it. The next day I came back to it and decided to give it one more chance, and I'm glad I did. While the beginning is pretty darn slow, it eventually picks up...not a lot but enough to keep you reading.

Abbey's best friend Kristen just died but no one really knows how it all happened. She struggles through people talking bad about Kristen, and coping with losing her best friend; her only friend really. Abbey meets a mysterious boy Caspian and they share a mutual attraction but it is pretty clear he is keeping a secret of his own. There is alot of back and forth with Abbey and Caspian. She wants so badly for them to be together but he pulls away, then can't help himself and is drawn back to her...repeatedly. At the end you find out Caspian's secret and Abbey has a sort of nervous breakdown.

There were parts were I really felt for Abbey and what she was going through with her best friend dying, her controlling but loving mother, her finding love and losing it, and then the whopper of a secret that she finds out about Caspian! I loved how she made perfume throughout the story, I could picture her sitting there trying to find the perfect scents. I could almost smell them!

Overall I think, while a little slower paced, this book was pretty good and worth checking out. I'll be reading the next book in the series, The Haunted. I hope the story will pick up where it left off as I felt that it was just starting to get really good! I'll cross my fingers for faster paced too! I hope you give this book a chance!

Cover of the Week

If you are anything like me you LOVE book covers! They are the first thing you see when choosing a book and honestly gorgeous covers have a huge draw. I know there have been plenty of books that I have seen and thought "that cover is amazing I have to have it!". I will admit that a pretty cover doesn't mean that the book will be any good but it sure doesn't hurt. Then again some covers are flat out horrible, dated, ugly, boring...but have wonderful books in them.

Anyways, my cover of the week pick is Mermaid: A Twist on the Classic Tale by Carolyn Turgeon.I have a little bit of a sweet spot for mermaids; watching The Little Mermaid over and over when you're little can do that to ya! But I think this cover would have caught my eye regardless. I mean its beautiful, the shimmering scales, the red hair, and the gorgeous colors! I can't wait for this book to come out on March 3rd!

Challenges

I have decided to sign up for some challenges. But she longs for freedom to make her own choices. When she breaks the most sacred tenet among her kind, she nearly pays with her life. Until a beautiful stranger saves her. A stranger who was sent to hunt those like her. For Jacinda is a Draki—a descendant of dragons whose greatest defense is her secret ability to shift into human form.

Forced to flee into the mortal world with her family, Jacinda struggles to adapt to her new surroundings. The only bright light is Will. Gorgeous, elusive Will who stirs her inner Draki to life. Although she is irresistibly drawn to him, Jacinda knows Will's dark secret: He and his family are hunters. She should avoid him at all costs. But her inner Draki is slowly slipping away—if it dies she will be left as a human forever. She'll do anything to prevent that. Even if it means getting closer to her most dangerous enemy.

Mythical powers and breathtaking romance ignite in this story of a girl who defies all expectations and whose love crosses an ancient divide.

Let me start by saying that as soon as I saw the cover to this book I just HAD to read it, it is absolutely gorgeous! And boy am I glad I did. I was totally engrossed in Firelight and read it in one sitting.

Jacinda is the first fire breathing Draki (descendants of dragons) in centuries which makes her a commodity to her pride, which is slowly fading in its powers. She is promised at just 16 years old to Cassian the prince of her pride, where she is expected to breed little fire breathing babies. Jacinda and her best friend Azure sneak out to fly during the day, which is a serious no no. While they are out they encounter Hunters, humans who kill and sell off Draki parts. She hides but is discovered by a Hunter named Will, with whom she shares an instant attraction, and he lets her go free. For her disobedience the pride elders decide on some pretty harsh punishment and Jacinda's mother takes her and her twin and flees in the night.

Jacinda's mom decides that the only way to keep them safe is if Jacinda's Draki dies. So she moves them far away from the mountains, lakes, and fertile soil that sustains her inner Draki, hoping that it will wither and die, leaving Jacinda human. What she doesn't know is that the Hunter,Will, who found her and let her go free lives in the same town. A family of very dangerous Hunters...and she can't seem to stay away. Her attraction to Will is still as strong as before and awakens her weakening Draki, making her almost manifest in a crowded school hallway. Their attraction is mutual, and while he doesn't know who she is in her human form, she knows exactly who he is and can't decide whether staying near him and keeping her Draki alive is worth the risk. She goes back and forth but is ultimately discovered and they decide to be together despite everything.

The ending is a total cliffhanger! I can't wait for the next book Vanish to come out in August!
